Telecom Intelligence: Week of June 24, 2024

The Supreme Court ended its term by detonating four decades of administrative law: Loper Bright overturned Chevron deference, stripping federal agencies — very much including the FCC — of the benefit of the doubt when statutes are ambiguous. It is the single most consequential development for telecom regulation in a generation, landing three weeks before the FCC's net neutrality rules were due to take effect. The same week, Brussels filed its first-ever Digital Markets Act charges against Apple over App Store steering, and the Court separately let the government keep talking to social platforms about misinformation, tossing Murthy v. Missouri on standing.

Nvidia completed its climb, passing Microsoft to become the most valuable public company on earth — a title held by a chipmaker for the first time in the modern market era. The week's cautionary tale came from the auto industry: a ransomware attack on CDK Global, the software backbone for roughly 15,000 dealerships, froze car sales across the country and dragged on for days, another demonstration that a single vendor can be a national single point of failure. And Apple, eleven days after unveiling Apple Intelligence, said its marquee AI features won't launch in the EU this year — blaming the Digital Markets Act's interoperability requirements.

Telecom Intelligence: Week of June 10, 2024

Apple finally showed its AI hand: Apple Intelligence, a system-wide layer across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with ChatGPT integrated into Siri and a hard hardware floor — most of it requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. In one keynote, Apple turned AI from a feature race into an upgrade-cycle engine aimed at hundreds of millions of aging handsets. Elon Musk responded by threatening to ban Apple devices from his companies, and Broadcom — the quiet giant whose silicon sits inside iPhones and data centers alike — beat earnings, announced a 10-for-1 split, and rode AI networking revenue to record levels.

Telecom Intelligence: Week of June 3, 2024

AT&T suffered its second high-profile incident of the year when customers spent hours unable to call people on other carriers — a failure of the unglamorous interconnection plumbing that makes separate networks feel like one phone system. The week also delivered an early warning that would define the summer: security researchers tied a wave of Snowflake cloud-account breaches to infostealer malware and missing multi-factor authentication, with Ticketmaster and Santander already implicated. And Nvidia blew past $3 trillion in market value, overtaking Apple as the AI trade rewrote the market's hierarchy. The FCC, meanwhile, proposed the first real rules for securing the internet's routing system.
