Weekly Telecom Intelligence: October 18–24, 2026
This week pushed satellite mobile from theory to tangible market pressure: Bloomberg reports SpaceX is negotiating access to at least 80,000 U.S. cell sites as it builds Starlink Mobile, and the FCC approved transfer of three AWS-3 licenses to Starlink Spectrum Holdings with milestone deadlines beginning in 2029. AST SpaceMobile said intermittent direct-to-device coverage windows will begin in five markets before year end, and Nokia with NVIDIA and T-Mobile completed the first AI-RAN call on a live commercial site. Taken together these developments signal a near-term emergence of hybrid satellite plus terrestrial wholesale offerings, and a shift toward software driven RAN and spectrum models that change how MVNEs must handle SLA, billing, and provisioning. MVNEs, tower partners, and MVNO brands should expect accelerated demand for hybrid connectivity products, tighter tower pricing leverage, and new regulatory and certification risks to factor into commercial contracts.

This week delivered a regulatory shock and multiple strategic pivots that matter to every wholesale enabler. The Fifth Circuit vacated the Q4 2025 USF contribution factor and ruled the FCC exceeded authority by creating USAC, creating immediate uncertainty around roughly $8.5 billion in annual USF flows. AT&T agreed to sell its Mexico wireless business for $2.0 billion, reinforcing a U.S.-first capital focus and shifting cross-border wholesale dynamics. Vendor and technology moves from Ericsson, Verizon, and Altair underscore consolidation of private 5G into operator-aligned stacks, early 6G experimentation, and mainstreaming of direct-to-device satellite for IoT.
Weekly Telecom Intelligence: October 4–10, 2026
This week saw a seismic shift as SpaceX agreed to buy Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz portfolio and the FCC cleared deployment of up to 15,000 NGSO satellites for direct-to-device services. AT&T announced a major wholesale fiber joint venture that will consolidate nearly 5 million fiber locations under an open-access model. Aviation and IoT moves, including American Airlines expanding Starlink inflight WiFi and Aeris partnering with Telna for local IMSIs and zero-touch eSIM in Brazil, reinforce new demand for multi-plane connectivity and local breakout. Collectively these developments accelerate a hybrid satellite-terrestrial wholesale market and raise the strategic importance of eSIM orchestration, roaming agreements, and API-enabled provisioning for MVNEs and MVNAs.
