What happened

Vodafone agreed to sell its Hungarian unit to local IT group 4iG (51%) and the Hungarian state (49%) for HUF 715 billion, roughly $1.8 billion. The deal closed in January 2023, folding Hungary's second-largest mobile operator into a government-aligned national champion alongside 4iG's other telecom assets.

Why it matters

This was the clearest signal of Vodafone's great European retreat — exiting markets where it lacked scale — and of a rising counter-trend: state-backed renationalization of telecom infrastructure. When a government buys half the second-largest carrier, wholesale access terms for MVNOs become a political question, not just a commercial one.
