What happened
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s Space Bureau approved Amazon Leo’s acquisition of Globalstar on October 27, 2026, clearing the agency’s review of the roughly $11.5 billion transaction and the transfer of about 25 MHz of Globalstar’s mobile-satellite service spectrum. The approval advances Amazon Leo’s plan to integrate Globalstar’s satellites, spectrum and infrastructure to accelerate a direct-to-device (D2D) commercial offering.
Why it matters
Regulatory sign-off removes a major barrier to Amazon’s rapid entry into D2D satellite-to-phone services and intensifies competition with incumbent LEO operators for consumer and carrier-focused connectivity. The deal also signalizes continued consolidation and spectrum aggregation in the satellite–terrestrial convergence market, raising pressure on carriers and MVNOs to plan for multi-network (terrestrial+satellite) service strategies.
