What happened

AT&T announced on May 21, 2025 an agreement to acquire Lumen's Mass Markets fiber business for $5.75 billion in cash, taking on roughly one million fiber customers and more than four million fiber passings across 11 states, in metros including Denver, Seattle, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City. The transaction completed on February 2, 2026, expanding AT&T's fiber footprint to 32 states, with AT&T planning to lift annual fiber construction to four million passings in 2026. The acquired network sits at roughly 25 percent penetration versus AT&T's 40 percent on its own builds.

Why it matters

The interesting number here is not the price, it is the penetration gap. AT&T is betting it can market its way from 25 percent to 40 percent on someone else's construction, which is a much cheaper way to grow than digging. For the wireless market, every fiber household AT&T converts becomes a convergence bundle candidate, which is exactly the play cable has been running in reverse with mobile lines.
