What happened
On August 26, 2025 AT&T announced an agreement to acquire approximately 50 MHz of nationwide spectrum from EchoStar — roughly 30 MHz of 3.45 GHz mid-band and 20 MHz of 600 MHz low-band licenses — for about $23 billion in cash. EchoStar shares surged around 70 percent on the news, which followed months of FCC pressure over whether EchoStar was meeting its buildout obligations. The FCC granted conditional approval on July 17, 2026, and after EchoStar's Dish units used a prepackaged Chapter 11 filing to facilitate the transition, the sale closed on July 28, 2026 — delivering EchoStar the roughly $23 billion in proceeds and handing AT&T the largest spectrum infusion in its history.
Why it matters
This is the FCC's pressure campaign converting directly into industry structure. EchoStar spent a decade assembling spectrum for a fourth network that never reached escape velocity, and Washington finally forced the question.
