What happened
On August 26 AT&T announced an agreement to acquire approximately 50 MHz of nationwide spectrum from EchoStar, roughly 30 MHz of 3.45 GHz mid-band and 20 MHz of 600 MHz low-band licenses, for about 23 billion dollars in cash, with closing expected in mid-2026 pending regulatory approval. EchoStar shares surged around 70 percent on the news, which followed months of FCC pressure over whether EchoStar was meeting its buildout obligations.
Why it matters
This is the FCC's pressure campaign converting directly into industry structure. EchoStar spent a decade assembling spectrum for a fourth network that never reached escape velocity, and Washington finally forced the question. AT&T gets the single largest spectrum infusion in its history, immediately deployable on existing 3.45 GHz-ready gear.
