What happened
CONX, the acquisition vehicle chaired by EchoStar cofounder Charlie Ergen, agreed to acquire a controlling stake of about 61 percent in MobileX, the customizable MVNO founded by Boost Mobile creator Peter Adderton. The transfer of control requires FCC approval and the deal is framed publicly as a strategic investment to fund MobileX's next phase of growth.
Why it matters
Ergen already runs Boost Mobile through EchoStar, so taking control of another value brand raises real questions about where MobileX will ride and what happens to its existing network relationships. Few pending deals say more about where US value wireless is heading.
