What happened
DISH Network and EchoStar announced an all-stock merger recombining Charlie Ergen's satellite and wireless empires ten years after their split. The deal, completed on December 31, 2023, put Boost Mobile, Boost Infinite, and DISH's struggling 5G network build under the EchoStar name alongside Hughes' satellite business.
Why it matters
This was a balance-sheet rescue dressed as strategy: DISH's retail wireless bet — anchored by the Boost MVNO brands it acquired in the Sprint remedy — needed EchoStar's cash to survive its debt wall. The fourth-carrier experiment the US government engineered in 2019 was now visibly on life support, with consequences for every MVNO that had counted on a hungry fourth wholesale host.
