What happened

iBASIS, the Tofane Global-owned international communications specialist, agreed to acquire Telstra International's global wholesale voice, IPX/mobile and messaging customer contracts, with Telstra signing a long-term agreement to buy those services back from iBASIS for its own needs. Terms were not disclosed. The deal continued Tofane's consolidation of carrier wholesale businesses that began with the iBASIS, Altice, and iBasis-KPN carve-outs. iBASIS completed the acquisition on February 27, 2026.

Why it matters

International voice and messaging wholesale is a shrinking, scale-driven business that big carriers increasingly want off their books — but they still need the services, so the asset sale comes bundled with a supply contract. iBASIS is executing the same playbook that built Tata's and BICS's wholesale scale: buy the traffic, keep the customer as a client. Every retreating incumbent hands the consolidators more routing leverage over the world's roaming and messaging flows.
