What happened
IoT connectivity provider KORE agreed to acquire Twilio's IoT business unit — including its Super SIM multi-network eSIM platform and roughly 10,000 customer accounts — in an all-stock deal that gave Twilio a stake in KORE. The transaction closed in June 2023, consolidating two of the best-known names in programmable IoT connectivity.
Why it matters
IoT MVNOs consolidated hard in 2023, and this deal marked the end of the 'CPaaS company as connectivity provider' experiment. Twilio had brought developer-first distribution to SIMs; its retreat handed that playbook to specialists. The lesson for the wholesale market: IoT connectivity is a scale game, and sub-scale platforms get absorbed.
