What happened

Macquarie Asset Management, on behalf of a privately managed infrastructure fund, agreed to acquire IHS Towers' Latin American tower operations — spanning Brazil, Colombia, and Peru — for $685 million. The carve-out was announced alongside MTN Group's proposed $6.2 billion acquisition of IHS itself, sharpening the remaining IHS portfolio around its core African footprint before the take-private completes.

Why it matters

The two-part structure tells the story: MTN wants IHS for Africa, not Latin America, so the LatAm towers go to infrastructure capital instead. Macquarie's entry keeps those markets in neutral-host hands even as IHS's African towers vertically integrate into an operator — a natural experiment in whether carrier-owned or independent tower models serve competition better, running on two continents at once.
