What happened
SES announced on April 30, 2024 an agreement to acquire Intelsat for €2.8 billion (about $3.1 billion) in cash plus contingent value rights, creating a combined operator with roughly 120 satellites across geostationary and medium earth orbits. The merger, uniting the two most storied names in commercial satellite communications after both spent years restructuring around C-band proceeds and bankruptcy, completed on July 17, 2025.
Why it matters
This is consolidation as survival strategy. Starlink changed the economics of satellite capacity so thoroughly that the geostationary incumbents had to merge to fund a credible multi-orbit answer, and even combined, SES-Intelsat will compete on reliability, coverage geometry, and government trust rather than price per bit. For connectivity buyers the practical effect is a stronger multi-orbit alternative for aviation, maritime, enterprise, and IoT backhaul, which keeps the market from becoming a single-vendor story just as satellite links become a standard part of terrestrial network design.
