What happened
Telit and Thales agreed to combine, with Telit acquiring Thales's cellular IoT products business — modules, gateways and data cards — in exchange for Thales taking a 25% stake in the combined company, renamed Telit Cinterion. The deal created the largest Western provider of IoT modules and solutions, positioned explicitly as a security-focused alternative to Chinese module makers. It closed in early 2023.
Why it matters
This was industrial policy executed through M&A. Western governments were growing uneasy about Quectel and Fibocom modules inside critical infrastructure, and Telit Cinterion gave procurement teams a scaled non-Chinese option. The 'Western IoT champion' framing in the announcement was the entire strategy — geopolitics had officially arrived in the module market.
