What happened

Verizon announced a definitive agreement to acquire Frontier Communications for $38.50 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at roughly $20 billion. The deal adds Frontier's 2.2 million fiber subscribers and network spanning 25 states to Verizon's Fios footprint, pushing its fiber passings past 25 million locations, with closing expected in about 18 months pending FCC, DOJ, and state approvals.

Why it matters

This is the largest pure fiber acquisition in US history, and it reframes what a wireless carrier is. Verizon is effectively buying back geography it exited years ago — because fixed wireless alone can't carry the broadband fight, and because every fiber strand doubles as backhaul for the mobile network. When the market leader pays cash for wires, the convergence debate is over.
