What happened
Space42 and Viasat signed a binding agreement to co‑found Equatys, a shared space-and-ground infrastructure venture for global direct‑to‑device (D2D) and advanced MSS connectivity. Each founder will make an initial $400M equity contribution, with the founders' combined commitment expected to reach up to $1B through a future equity funding round open to third‑party investors.
Why it matters
A large, neutral D2D infrastructure JV backed by two major satcom players accelerates commercial NTN deployment and lowers barriers for MNOs to buy space‑based 3GPP services. The move signals consolidation around shared infrastructure models for D2D and could prompt faster partner commitments from carriers and other investors.
