What happened

On March 30, Bharti Airtel announced a $1 billion investment in Nxtra Data, its data center subsidiary, led by Alpha Wave Global with $435 million, alongside Carlyle at $240 million, Anchorage Capital at $35 million, and Airtel itself funding the balance. The round values Nxtra at roughly $3.1 billion post-closing, with Airtel retaining control. Proceeds will fund AI-focused capacity expansion across India, where Nxtra already deploys AI for predictive maintenance and energy management.

Why it matters

A carrier just got private equity to fund its AI infrastructure buildout while keeping control, at a multiple its core telecom business could never command. Every operator holding land, power contracts, and fiber routes is studying this deal, because the same playbook converts sunk network assets into a separately valued growth story.
