What happened
Helium Mobile took its crypto-powered wireless service nationwide with a $20-a-month unlimited plan, combining T-Mobile's network with its community-built decentralized hotspot network and rewarding subscribers in MOBILE tokens for sharing coverage and location data.
Why it matters
The first serious DePIN attack on US wireless pricing. Helium's bet — that a token-incentivized community network could subsidize a price the big carriers can't match — made it the most-watched experiment in alternative network economics, and set up the free Zero plan that followed in 2025.
