AT&T answered Verizon's fiber move in less than a week. On May 21 AT&T agreed to acquire Lumen's Mass Markets fiber business for 5.75 billion dollars, picking up roughly a million fiber customers and four million passings across eleven states, and confirming that the fiber land grab is now a two-horse race among the biggest carriers. Google used its I/O conference on May 20 to rebuild search and Android around its Gemini AI models, a platform shift with long consequences for how mobile traffic flows. And on May 23 President Trump threatened Apple with a 25 percent tariff on iPhones not manufactured in America, yanking the device supply chain into the trade war and rattling the economics of every carrier's upgrade cycle.
