The Atomic Take on the partnerships shaping wireless

The telecom industry announces partnerships every day — most don't matter. These are the ones that do, with Atomic's take on what each deal means for MVNOs, MVNEs, IoT builders, and the wireless ecosystem. Reviewed and published by our editorial team.

Sabesp, Vivo and Idemia deploy 4.4M smart‑meter IoT project in São Paulo

What happened

Sabesp announced a 14‑year programme with Vivo and Idemia Secure Transactions to connect 4.4 million smart water meters in São Paulo City and São José dos Campos, describing the initiative as the world’s largest IoT connectivity project for water metering. The deployment uses Idemia’s eSIM/iSIM IoT platform (stated to be GSMA SGP.32‑compliant) to deliver hourly consumption data, leak detection and network optimisation via cellular IoT connectivity. The Atomic Take

4/5

This deal highlights how large utilities are buying end‑to‑end connectivity bundles rather than just SIMs: MNOs can win by combining scale, coverage and integration capabilities while third‑party eSIM/iSIM platforms take on profile management and device security. For MVNEs/MVNOs that serve enterprise and vertical markets, the commercial opportunity is to offer certified eSIM orchestration, lifecycle management and SLA‑backed connectivity packages that meet utility security standards (SGP.32) and evolving post‑quantum requirements. US carriers AT&T, T‑Mobile and Verizon partner with Glide.id on SIM‑anchored security

What happened

AT&T, T‑Mobile US and Verizon have teamed with digital identity company Glide.id to deploy a carrier‑native authentication service called MagicalAuth that is intended to phase out one‑time SMS passwords. The offering is in public beta on iOS and Android and uses open network APIs plus hardware‑rooted cryptographic keys in SIMs and eSIMs to verify subscribers at the network level. Glide.id framed the launch as a response to rising identity fraud and said it is expanding availability following initial rollouts in Germany, the UK and Spain, with deployments in Canada reported as underway. (mobileworldlive.com)

The Atomic Take

3/5

Moving authentication into the SIM/eSIM and operator network changes where digital trust is anchored, which has direct consequences for MVNOs and MVNEs. To offer SIM‑anchored logins to customers, MVNOs will likely need host‑operator API access or an MVNE integration to surface MagicalAuth capabilities, increasing the technical value of MVNE platform services (API aggregation, eSIM lifecycle and credential management). That creates a commercial opportunity for MVNEs to package identity‑enabled offerings for brand MVNOs, while independent MVNOs that lack rapid access to operator APIs may face a short‑term gap in competitive security features. Monzo launches eSIM service with Virgin Media O2 and 1GLOBAL

What happened

Monzo has announced Monzo Mobile, an eSIM-only phone offering integrated into its banking app that lets customers monitor data, roaming and spend from the same interface. Virgin Media O2 will supply the UK network infrastructure and 5G connectivity, while 1GLOBAL will handle international roaming and global network integration across more than 200 destinations. The service is planned to roll out in the summer of 2026 with three flexible, no-long-term-contract plans and targets Monzo’s personal banking customer base.

The Atomic Take

3/5

The partnership illustrates the growing preference among digital-first brands to assemble connectivity through partnerships rather than building network assets, increasing demand for MVNE/MVNA capabilities like eSIM provisioning, billing integration and global roaming aggregation. For wholesale MNOs and MVNEs, the ability to deliver seamless app-level controls and turnkey roaming will be a key competitive lever as more non-telco brands consider embedded connectivity. Expect heightened competition in the eSIM/SIM-only segment and more emphasis on integration tooling and commercial flexibility from wholesale partners.

Thales and Airalo launch integrated Travel eSIM to streamline global activation

What happened

Thales has integrated its eSIM connectivity management technology into Airalo’s travel eSIM platform to simplify and speed connections to local mobile networks for travellers. The partnership applies across Airalo’s catalog that covers more than 200 destinations and its user base of over 20 million. Using the new Thales Travel eSIM solution, Airalo customers can select a data plan in the Airalo app and automatically connect to the best local network without swapping physical SIMs. (businesswire.com)

The Atomic Take

3/5

Inference: pairing a vendor-grade eSIM management stack with a large retail distribution platform accelerates a separation of roles in the travel eSIM market—security, provisioning and network access on the vendor side, distribution and UX on the retailer side. That dynamic increases expectations on MVNEs and platform providers to support automated provisioning and network-selection APIs or to partner with certified eSIM enablers to remain competitive. Lowering activation friction for roaming/data plans also risks compressing margins for traditional roaming resellers while expanding addressable demand for scalable travel eSIM offerings.
