Lockheed Martin & Verizon pilot 5G-based drone-detection service
What happened
Lockheed Martin, Verizon, Nvidia and several partners demonstrated NetSense, an Airspace Awareness-as-a-Service that uses existing Verizon 5G infrastructure and AI to identify, track and issue alerts on unmanned aerial systems. The system was trialled in a high-traffic area of Miami in July 2026 and integrated ODC Networks’ AI-RAN software, Nvidia’s AI Aerial platform and Keysight’s RF simulation tools. Lockheed Martin describes NetSense as an open-architecture, subscription service compatible with current radio deployments; pilots are scheduled for late 2026 and early 2027 with a selective launch targeted by end-2027. This suggests a practical path for operators to monetise "network-as-sensor" capabilities by packaging airspace monitoring as a managed service for enterprises. For MVNOs and MVNEs the opportunity is twofold: white-label or resell operator-delivered sensing services, or integrate RF/edge-AI feeds into their own value-added security and enterprise connectivity bundles — but both approaches require negotiated access to RF measurement data, edge compute and APIs from host MNOs. Regulatory, privacy and liability concerns — and the involvement of defence primes and specialised vendors — may limit how broadly and quickly these offerings can be commercialised, so MVNEs should treat this as a platform-level product opportunity that demands clear SLAs, data governance and partner agreements.
